We read thousands of books in our lifetime, but only a few manages to leave their imprint on our soul. They heal us, console us and, even have power to render us helpless within the stories.
“When we read a story, we inhabit it. The covers of the book are like a roof and four walls. What is to happen next will take place within the four walls of the story. And this is possible because the story’s voice makes everything its own.”
Norwegian Wood by Haruki Murakami and, The Memory Police by Yoko Ogawa were the 2 books that helped me reconcile with many events of my life that shattered me into million pieces. Shattered, still I am. But I know now I am not alone in the “loneliness”…
Let’s talk about Yoko Ogawa’s book The Memory Police. It was a book, that reminded me of peoples that were disappearing from life. Forever. In their wake, left gaping holes. And I, over the time was losing the memories of their touch, voices and faces even. Yet the emptiness remains… Never in my entire life have I ever wept so much. Weep, I have many times, when reading a book. But this time it was from deep inside the broken recesses of my heart.
The Memory Police has taken roots in my heart, and I will definitely re-visit it again. And I highly recommend it to you guys as well.
Norwegian Wood by Haruki Murakami came as a shock to me. Shock I say, because it was a book about me. About depression. I was Naoko, I was Reiko, Midori and in the end Toru. Forever damaged. Because depression is like that; it damages you forever.
You ask me, how I know? I know because I have been in the battle with depression for a long time now. Sometimes I win and, sometimes wins the power of depression over me. It never leaves you completely. Never. It’s just a matter of when the sleeping dragon rises.
“If you’re in pitch blackness, all you can do is sit tight until your eyes get used to the dark”
Norwegian Wood helped me come to terms with many things, however, temporary, yet I am in peace, right now.
