You know, the very word “forbidden” has always given me a different sort of feeling altogether. It sounds fantastic, intimidating, queer, and scary all at once. Why? Well, imagine if something is considered “forbidden”, it is definitely “out of bounds” for one and also a subject matter of the utmost grave concern, right?

Hmm, it happened so that I have always been very fascinated with all that is “forbidden”. Anything that comes across as being inaccessible has always given me a different excitement—an adrenaline rush to pursue it and check it out for sure. So today, just going over my usual fabulous pile of reads on one side and the mundane, ordinary sort of commitments of the mortal world on the other you know (my usual chores silly!) I thought, “Let me give you guys a list of six forbidden places on Earth:
Mausoleum, China
Located in the Lintong district, Xi’an, Shaanxi, Qin Shi Huang’s tomb, which is located here and was discovered in 1974, hasn’t been excavated yet. As the tomb of the First Emperor, who also unified the country, it is the largest in Chinese history, having a unique standard and layout as well as a large number of exquisite funeral objects. Thus, in response to the pressure of urban development and tourism, the Shaanxi provincial government has set the borders for protection and prohibited development here.
Coca-Cola vault in the United States
Considered one of the best-kept secrets in the world, the recipe for Coca-Cola is stowed away in a significant security vault here in Atlanta, United States. Located in a museum in a 20-acre complex across Baker Street, it holds the original recipe. The secret formula, which is encased in a metal box, is kept stowed inside the vault. In fact, as per myth, only two people have ever seen the secret recipe. The Coca-Cola Corporation has gone above and beyond to keep this fiercely guarded secret.
Bhangarh Fort in India
This cursed fort, built by the ruler of Amber Kachwaha for his youngest son in 1573, gradually saw its population dwindle until 1783 when a strong famine forced the villagers still living there to flee. Several tales and folktales are doing the rounds about why the place has been considered doomed, cursed, and unsafe to visit, and listening to every one of them, I am sure even you will believe that they are of considerable weight since they all have facts and red flags that surely appear as warning signs when you see around the “forbidden territory”. Even the ASI (Archaeological Survey of India) constantly urges everyone to leave the premises before sunset. Now, coming from that higher point of authority, surely that means something. (I even heard a fact that no one could build a roof in this place over any house since as soon as one is made, it collapses and kills the people residing beneath. Spooky!)
Room 39, North Korea
Created in the late 1970s, it is one of the world’s most secretive organizations. Described as the linchpin of North Korea’s “court economy,” it is not only involved in the management of foreign currency earnings but also runs networks of legal as well as illegal companies and also has control of many more major places as well as activities such as counterfeiting $100 bills as well as drug-related ones. Thus, given the major stash of the party that seeks ways, fair or foul, to maintain the foreign currency slush fund for the country’s leaders, it is only natural that this place be forbidden as well as severely protected.
Snake Island, Brazil
This island, which may seem like the ideal exotic spot to travel and explore, has been uninhabited for decades due to the fact that it has been completely invaded by lethal snakes. Ilha da Queimada Grande, an island located off the coast of Brazil in the Atlantic, is actually the only natural home of the critically endangered, venomous pit vipers, who survive and hunt birds. Having become trapped on this island thousands of years ago, following the end of the last ice age, the rising ocean levels had disconnected the island from the mainland. Nobody in their right mind wants to meet these golden beauties, right?
The Chornobyl Nuclear Power Plant Zone
It is an officially designated exclusion zone done with the purpose of restricting access to hazardous areas, since today it is definitely one of the most radioactively contaminated areas in the world, radiating some of the highest levels of radiation exposure in the environment. In fact, did you know there have been cases of deformity in animals living in the zone, including partial albinism and several other mutations and malformations? It sounds like a zombie apocalypse, doesn’t it?
