Book review of Yes No Maybe So by Becky Albertalli, Aisha Saeed

After like ages, I got to read a YA romance book, and also, my mind had completely forgotten how a Young Adult book tasted like. So obviously my expectations for this book Yes No Maybe So by Becky Albertalli and Aisha Saeed were sky rocketing. So the question was was this book good enough?

Well, as I begun, I thought this to be something I am going to enjoy immensely, because the first chapter was entertaining and I became hopelessly enamored with the character Sophie right away. Yet after the first chapter things began to get dull and insipid. And when I say dull and insipid, I mean the characters lacked depth – Jamie, Maya, Granny, all felt sort of shallow – and the story was moving in an agonizingly slow pace. Be that as it may, when I crossed 150 pages or so, the story improved, even the characters felt all the more genuine.

Set in the background of politics, the book Yes No Maybe So by Becky Albertalli and Aisha Saeed offers more than old hat sentiment: teen activism with election highs and lows, messy divorces, bat mitzvah stress, social media goof-ups, friendship and family dramas, and cultural misunderstandings are the main cruxes that keeps the reader snared. And in addition to all these, what truly dazzled me more than anything else was the realistic approach to the plotline and to the characters; Jamie’s social awkwardness, to Maya and Sophie’s sassiness and of course Jamie’s grandmother; everything felt good after the initial hesitation in the story.

The end was entirely a conventional one, though, I was expecting it to end on a winning note, regardless, it was happy one for Jamie – finally he gave a speech in her sister’s Bat Mitzvah – and Maya(yeyi!, she at last got her own car).

Yes No Maybe So by Becky Albertalli and Aisha Saeed is an engaging read, however, it is anything but an ideal read. There are without a doubt better YA romance books available yet in the event that someone truly needs to get a light lockdown read, this book may end up being exactly what you are searching for.
