Poetry has always been my weakness for the simple reason that it tends to get deep into the core of my soul, playfully tickling the emotional walls of my being and resonating with my insights in a manner that I feel is a joyous fusion of both wisdom and a true examination of my inner self, my true inner soul. Naturally, wanting to explore more writers’ works, I have also read one of the world’s most acclaimed poets, Rupi Kaur, from Canada.

Rupi Kaur’s debut poetry collection, Milk and Honey, has captured the hearts of readers all around the world since its release in 2014. This book, divided into four parts, explores the themes of love, loss, abuse, and healing in a raw and honest manner. In this review, we will take a deep dive into the themes of love, loss, and healing in Milk and Honey.

The first part of the book, “the hurting,” sets the tone for the rest of the collection. Here, Kaur explores the pain of heartbreak, abuse, and trauma. The poems in this section are heartbreaking and raw, and they explore the complex emotions that come with these experiences. For example, in the poem “you were so afraid of my voice, I decided to be afraid of it too,” Kaur writes about how the fear of speaking up can become ingrained in a person after experiencing abuse. Yes, I know this one and sooo feel it, as this habit of not being able to speak up or find one’s voice is something I relate to , not only for myself but for many others I can think of. Yes, abuse is a serious being in itself, and Rupi has personified that demon, and yet she more than thwarts it through her addressing of the issue, making a deep connection in the process with the reader’s minds.

The second part of the book, “the loving,” explores the theme of love in all its forms. Here, Kaur writes about romantic love, self-love, and the love between family members. The poems in this section are often sweet and tender, providing a sense of balance to the raw emotion in the first section. For example, in the poem “I do not want to have you fill the empty parts of me,” Kaur explores the idea that true love should not be about completing someone else, but about two whole people coming together to make something greater. Yes, that coming together for the greater good, that fusion for something better, is something with which we all, especially Indians, resonate very well, as that has been a part of our tradition and culture too. And yet, Rupi has taken this from a global perspective, giving a universal vantage to this thought. Brilliant portrayal, if there ever was one.

The third part of the book, “the breaking,” returns to the theme of pain and loss. In this section, Kaur writes about the process of healing and moving on from heartbreak and trauma. The poems in this section are often empowering and uplifting, showing how a person can find strength and resilience even in their darkest moments. For example, in the poem “you have to stop searching for why at some point you have to leave it alone,” Kaur writes about the importance of letting go and moving forward, even if the reason for someone’s pain is unclear. Yes, learning to deal with pain is tricky and the way Rupi leads her readers forward in this regard, I have to hand it into her wisdom and good sense, the manner in which she elucidates the pain and its place and journey in our life paths.

The final part of the book, “the healing,” is a celebration of self-love and healing. Here, Kaur writes about finding inner peace and acceptance after experiencing pain and trauma. The poems in this section are often affirming and empowering, providing a sense of hope and renewal. For example, in the poem “I am a museum full of art but you had your eyes shut,” Kaur celebrates the beauty and value of the self, even when others fail to see it.

Overall, Milk and Honey is a powerful and deeply emotional collection of poetry that explores the many facets of love, loss, and healing. Kaur’s writing is both raw and honest, and she is unafraid to explore difficult and painful subjects. Her poems are often short and simple, yet they pack a punch, and they stay with you long after you’ve finished reading.

One of the most striking things about Milk and Honey is the way Kaur’s poetry is grounded in her personal experiences. Many of the poems in the collection were inspired by her own life, and this gives the writing a sense of authenticity and rawness that is hard to find elsewhere. For example, the poem “what is stronger than the human heart, which shatters over and over and still lives” is a reflection on the resilience of the heart, and Kaur has said that it was inspired by her mother’s experience of leaving an abusive marriage.

Another aspect of Milk and Honey that stands out is the way Kaur uses language. Her writing is simple and direct, yet it is also incredibly powerful. She has a gift for distilling complex emotions and experiences into just a few words, and this makes her poetry accessible to a wide range of readers.
