As we prepare to indulge in the festivities, here are 15 Bollywood movies to watch before watching Akshay Kumar’s Raksha Bandhan this festive season.
So, as we prepare to celebrate the festivities symbolizing the bond of love and protection between a brother and a sister yet again this time, we at the onset want to wish all our readers the best from our end for this festival of joy and happiness. We sincerely hope and pray that may every sister always have a brother by her side, to not only give a tappli (smack on the head you morons!!) whenever she feels like (oh, ok, enough kidding..) but also her foundation and her rock FOREVER in life. Blessed are those brothers who have a sister to bless them with nothing but the best for them and fortunate are those sisters who have their Bhau’s standing for them through thick and thin.
Your brother might be the biggest pest officially you can ever get (hehe, wait I shall troll more yeah!), he may be the bane of your existence, knocking the wind out of your lungs but trust me that banter and bickering is something you cannot do without in life. Likewise, your sister might be the biggest whacko and nerve-wracking dumbo you have ever met, but hey doesn’t his heart melt away like butter, wanting to blast the world into smithereens when his “Guddi” or “Moti” or “Dumbo” is troubled ever?
Yes, that is exactly what is a brother-sister love. You might be like “What’s gotten into her today?” But hey, kya karun, there was seriously no other fun way to explain this khatta meetha Rishta to you in a better manner.
Anyways, with Rakshabandhan around the corner, not to forget the movie “Raksha Bandhan “releasing too, wait you know about it, don’t you? Arey baba, Akshay Kumar’s latest titled “Raksha Bandhan” which is releasing on the occasion of Raksha Bandhan on 11th August 2022 is one movie I am eagerly waiting for. Why? Simple. There haven’t been many movies in a long time showcasing the sibling bond and with Akshay Kumar on board this one is sure to be a must-watch, I feel.
So, I thought of getting together a list of 15 such Bollywood movies for you which depict the brother-sister relationship, on the eve of Raksha Bandhan:
1. Hare Rama Hare Krishna
Ok, who can forget this one? The 1971 Dev Anand -Zeenat Aman flick shows a brother who travels to Kathmandu to find his long-lost sister, who is with a band of hippies and get her back to the family. The iconic “Dum Maaro Dum” song was from this one.
2. Chhoti Bahen
This 1959 flick which stars Nanda, Balraj Sahni and Rehman is a story of how tragedy strikes a young man when his sister who is about to get married loses her eyesight and their uncle forcefully occupies their home, rendering them homeless. A rigmarole of emotions.
3. Sikandar
This 1941 period drama starred Prithvi Raj Kapoor, as Alexander the Great and was one of the first movies to show the festival of Rakhi. This one marks the beginning of the portrayal of the festival big time.
4. Humayun
Ashok Kumar played the titular role in this one whilst Veena played his sister Karnavati in this 1945 film. They were one of the first brother-sister duos whose sibling bond aka Raksha Bandhan was portrayed through a movie.
5. Dil Dhadakne Do
Ok, one word for this one-uber cool. I mean I barely know a few recent movies which show such a cool yet mature kind of a tete-a-tete between two siblings as this one. Kabir and Ayesha were truly each other’s confidantes as well as a backbone through and through. Love this one!
6. Fiza
Ok, this one was intense and how! Journaling a sister’s tryst and her relentless attempts, first to locate her missing brother and then get him justice was one of the best emotional narratives I had seen back then. Superb camaraderie between Karishma and Hrithik!
7. Josh
Speaking about camaraderie, this one has been famous for like forever, thanks to the duo of Shahrukh and Aishwarya. Max and Shirley were like the ultimate cool bro-sis back then.
8. Pyaar Kiya to Darna Kya
Ok, this one is my personal favourite. Reason? Well, the emotional quotient Arbaaz and “Bachhi” aka his sister Kajol have portrayed is like all things me and my bro. The way he is overprotective, the way he gets angry, uff…same like my bro.
9. Dhanak
This one is highly acclaimed for its powerful plot. A movie based on a girl who takes her blind brother out of town so that she can get his eyes treated. Filled with obstacles, laughter, innocence as well as perseverance and courage this one had the deserts of Rajasthan to meander into.
10. Bumm Bumm Bole
An adaptation of the 1997 Iranian movie Children of Heaven, this one is about Pinu and Rimzim who share the same pair of school shoes. The story depicts how a boy tries his best to win a shoe for his sister.
11. Iqbal
The story of a boy who is deaf and dumb and aspires to be a cricketer, Iqbal is helped in his journey of overcoming obstacles by his sister who is not only his supporter but also his cheerleader as well as his teacher. A superbly inspiring movie.
12. My Brother Nikhil
The story of Nikhil who is diagnosed with HIV and how his sister Anamika helps him accept his condition and live with it until death is filled with overwhelming emotions.
13. Sarabjit
Based on the real-life story of an Indian prisoner in Pakistan and the struggles his sister has to undergo to get him out, this one speaks of Dalbir Kaur and all the hardships she faced to get her brother Sarabjit out jail. A heart-wrenching Saga.
14. Resham Ki Dori
This 1974 flick shows the emotional side of brother-sister love and has one of the most famous songs which are played until today to celebrate this festive day aka Behna ne Bhai Ki Kalaai se..
15. Bandhan
This one shows how a younger brother does all it takes to make his elder sister happy, even if it means sacrificing his own happiness. An amazing example of how strong can a bond be between two siblings.
So, hope you guys liked this little bouquet of movies I have got together, especially for you guys to watch this festive season of sibling love and togetherness. Remember, your sibling is that person who will stand for you through thick and thin come what may. Celebrate, love, share and revel and make more memories coz there is nothing more precious than having a sibling’s love. As it is eccentricity is a vibe, it definitely must be done in pairs, right? Aur ek nahi there is always more than one nut needed to crack the idiosyncrasy called life, hehe.
