The magic of romance is such that even Bollywood is not far behind in getting caught in its spell. Hindi love story movies are the ultimate haven for all romance lovers and are a true solace, especially for those in love. Yes, Pyaar ka jaadu, Pyaar ka nasha hi kuch aisa hai ki, one cannot remain out of its charm. Hindi love stories have a captivating sort of hold, and we have come to regard Hindi love story movies as our talismans whenever we are in a relationship or are about to get into or out of one. It suddenly becomes a habit, a practice, to catch up on them whenever we think of love or a love story. Boy, don’t we all simply love revelling in the magic of romance these Hindi love story movies create?

So, then what? Today I thought, Let me make you experience the magic of romance with these 10 Hindi love story movies:

Ek Duje Ke Liye

Okie, I am going to start with the absolute epic of them all. A true story of love and sacrifice, this one is such a tale that it will bring tears to every eye. Perhaps one of the finest love stories of India, this one proved that indeed love has no language barriers, regional boundaries, or caste differentiations. Beautiful music aside, this tragic love story is a must-watch for all who want to delve into the depths of the true intensity of love. Vasu and Sapna’s love story is something youngsters vouch for even today.

Veer Zaara

Yet another story of star-crossed lovers who pine for each other for a very long time before they finally meet—this is yet another cult story you ought not to miss. A classic and an absolute masterpiece to cherish, this one is a roller coaster of emotions—joy, passion, anger, grief, and much more. Shahrukh has personified Veer in such an immortal way; his intensity, his love, his true sacrifice, as well as Zaara’s relentless wait, her strongheadedness in accepting her fate, and her steadfast love for Veer, are emotions people feel under their skins.

Dilwale Dulhania Le Jayenge

Ok, one honest confession, this one is my all-time favourite movie and possibly that of countless others like me. The love story of Raj and Simran is way beyond epic today. In its 28th year of release, the movie continues to run in Mumbai’s famous Maratha Mandir cinema today, satiating millions of Hindi love story movie fans with the magic of romance. Be it the songs, the story itself, the actors, or the performances, this one was every inch of the cult it made, capturing a place in our hearts forever. Tujhe Dekha to Ye Jaana is almost the official love anthem, as is Mehndi Laga Ke Rakhna, the song that is the customary play at all marriages after that.

Dil To Pagal Hai

Uff, like, need I even say anymore? Rahul, Pooja, and Nisha’s love story made us fall in love with love all over again, didn’t it? The whole Ek Duje ke vaaste waali feeling—the “someone somewhere is made for you”—was Yash Chopra, who has possibly given us the best possible Hindi love story movies, the best possible love theories, and the most iconic magic of romance. Even today, after two decades, this one is as fresh as a daisy, the ultimate Bollywood Hindi romance for those who are hopelessly in love. From the iconic music to the choreography and cinematography, every aspect of this one has been sheer magic. Le gayi, le gayi—it’s another emotion because I challenge even the heroines of today to re-create Karisma Kapoor’s magic. Impossible!

Jaane Tu..Ya Jaane Na

A coming-of-age romantic comedy This one was a rage and also received huge commercial success and acclaim for being extremely fun-filled, engaging entertainment, apart from being a cute love story. Be it the picture-perfect cast, the youth-centric plot, or the music of A. R. Rahman, there was enough froth and frizz packed into this one to appeal to all at once. Be it Imran Khan and Genelia Deshmukh’s chemistry or Abbas Tyrewala’s amazing dialogue and direction, this one was a perfect 10. And Pappu can’t dance sala, still, huh!

Jab We Met

The heartwarming story of how a depressed, wealthy businessman finds his life changing when he meets a spunky, free-spirited, carefree young woman—this one is all mushy. Geet and Aditya’s tale of love is as beautiful as the scenic mountains in the love story have been shot in. Having managed to build realistic, consistent, yet deeply intense characters, Imtiaz Ali managed to strike gold with this one, making a cult classic that will perhaps go down as one of those Hindi love story movies that will be immortal in more ways than one. A simple one yet narrated in an enjoyable and heartwarming manner, this is a movie you cannot miss.

Qayamat se Qayamat Tak

One of the first sweet, beautiful and tragic tales of love (p.s. read in that order, that is how I remember this one, huh!) Be it Rashmi’s sweet simplicity, the beautiful love story between Raj and Rashmi, or the tragic ending (sigh, I am crying), this one has made an impression on the minds of all for perhaps eternity, if truth be told. Papa Kehte Hain is a feeling till today, as I understand this is one track that is surreptitiously played at every school and college farewell. Aamir and Juhi’s innocuous chemistry was what made this one click, and so was the story. Tragedy always has a longer life, I’d say, as far as love stories go.

Lamhe

Ok, I am going, to be honest about this one. A love story far ahead of its time, for sure. Commercially, this one did moderately well domestically, yet it is hailed as one of Yash Chopra’s finest works. That is because the concept of love with age and generational differences was first explored in this one, and Chopra has done so beautifully. The acceptance, letting go, living and reliving of memories, the whole aspect of love and coming of age—there was a lot to Lamhe, and till today, I swear each time I watch and visit it, there comes unravelling another layer, which gives me a different hue of life and spectre.

Kabhi Kabhie

A romantic drama, this musical was again produced by the maestro of romance himself, Yash Chopra. This movie is a love story of generations and how a chain of events brings together old lovers as friends. A stellar ensemble of actors, a brilliant music score, and the best possible performances—what is there to enjoy in this one? I believe the melodious title track, Kabhi Kabhie, from this one, is possibly one of the finest love songs ever made, so much so that die-hard romantics croon it fondly even today.

Gadar-Ek Prem Katha

Set during the 1947 partition, this one is a story of how a truck driver falls in love with a Muslim girl belonging to an aristocratic family. The titular roles were played by Sunny Deol, Ameesha Patel, and Amrish Puri, and this one is still remembered for its ethereal simplicity, innocence, and magic of pure romance. A flick about true love and its struggles, this one ticks all the boxes for an awesome music score, direction, amazing performances, and some cool action. Yes, Sunny Paaji can fight, but he can also love intensely, and this one proved it big time. Udd jaa Kaale Kaava is a fond memory, an emotion, not just a musical track, and TBH, after the announcement being made for Gadar 2, I swear I can’t wait!
