Summary

‘Water seeks water. From water shall rise not one but two entwined. Fates may unite. Yet, it may not. If the heart not seeketh the one that is lost.’
– The prophecy

What happens when you’re told that the life you were living so far was only a lie?

Nineteen-year-old Nilza Wangmo’s mother has gone missing, and with the hope of finding her, she embarks on a journey to Béyul – a mystical land hidden deep in the Himalayas behind invisible portals. What awaits her changes everything.

Ruled by the queens, Béyul is a land both ancient and modern where oracles divine dangers and future, where a mythological creature walks its mountains and people travel only by air.

Under an imminent threat, Béyul needs Prince Wangzin – born part-human, part-beast, carrying an ancient legacy – to unite with his chosen consort in order to awaken his power.

A retelling of Beauty and the Beast using ancient Himalayan myths and folklore surrounding the yeti, Béyul Hidden Lands is a spellbinding coming-of-age tale of love and adventure.

Beyuls are places to relax, reflect and rejuvenate when the chaos of the world becomes too great.

Chris Attwood

Beyul actually refers to secret or hidden land. There is a tradition in Tibetan folklore of Beyul, usually described as valleys. The tradition of the Himalayan Buddhist Elders -the Nyingmapa – says that Guru Rinpoche empowered 108 of these havens, places where there was peace, prosperity and spiritual progress was facilitated.

Our book in review today, Beyul Hidden Lands by Yoshay Lama Lindblom is a Fantasy fiction written with hints of beautiful mythological facts attached to it. 19-year-old Nilza’s mother has gone missing and with the hopes of finding her, she embarks upon a journey to  Beyul, hidden deep in the Himalayas. Although, what awaits her is absolutely unexpected, changing everything.

A Land where a mythological creature, Yeti inhabits the mountains and prophecies, to unhinge even the most powerful Prince Wagzin prevail, this spellbinding, coming of age Saga promises supremely packed entertainment.

A Spin-off Retelling of the famous Beauty and the Beast, with beautiful, enlightening depictions of the folklore surrounding Yeti, this narrative by Yoshay promises to not only keep you spellbound with its amazing plotline and characterizations but also the descriptive backstories pertaining to cosmic divinity at the end of every chapter are equally enticing.

The first in a series of what promises to be an Enthralling saga, Beyul Hidden Lands is as informative as it is interesting. I was spellbound by the aura Yoshay has managed to create around her characters, giving them an uncannily mystical kind of feel.

The fascinating depiction of the magical kingdoms, the intertwining plotline, the complete warrior-royal queen history also was very well put across.

Her language and narrative are smooth and beautiful and her description was flawless. I instantly fell in love with her style of writing.

The Yeti, its complete significance and presence in the plot in relation to the main story is spellbinding.

The story of Hayum, the God of the Sky, Surimi, the Moon Goddess and Kirumi, the Sun Goddess has been narrated after every chapter making it for an interesting back story and an informative read alongside. The history of the inception as well as the evolution of the Yeti, the curse related to its life is what shall make up for an intriguing read.

The cover has been designed tastefully too, I must say. The calm, serene effect the snow-capped mountains offer has been made equally intimidating with the presence of the Yeti’s silhouette, giving the cover a complete feel of an amazing Fantasy.

For me, fantasy has always made up for a very important bit of my reading routine, especially more so because this is that one genre, I sincerely feel, is truly comforting as it transports you to complete another land, promising to sweep you off your feet, with its magical portrayals, its mystical characters, a fabulous storyline and most of all, in the majority of the cases, a promise- to continue the series in an equally captivating manner via the next one.

A superbly written fantasy, promising to be one of the first amazing pieces of writing in many more to come…

Good work by Yoshay.
