Review: Party Crasher by Sophie Kinsella

Indeed, if truth be told, in the wise words of Gene Hackman Dysfunctional families have hired a number of pretty good actors.

Sigh, that’s the thing about one. There is so much more to it than what meets the eye.

My book in review today from the queen of #chicklit fiction is one compelling read which, though falls in her usual genre of love, bickering, situational comedy, romance, yet has a spectrum to it, which is endearing as well as heartwarming at the same instance. It is the story of Effie, her dysfunctional family and what happens when she decides to step onto the toes of her stepmother and gets ”uninvited” for a “cooling off” house party thrown by her and her Dad. This amazing rigmarole only gets better as you proceed with entertainment as well as emotion being rolled into one big funny, romantic yet sensitive kaleidoscope. The revelations she discovers after gatecrashing the party, the eavesdropping she does on conversations, her equation with her family members especially her brother Gus, her sister Bean and her stepmom Krista are as realistic as they are enjoyable. Be it for Bean who was the typical older sister, sweet yet diplomatic and protective or Effie who was one character I just loved for the cheek of her, Sophie yet again manages to enthral us with her writing, proving time and again that be it something as mild as even chick-lit, it can surely hold the potential to convey the best of emotions if written well.

I have had the pleasure of reading another of her wonderful titles which had resonated in a similar wavelength with me called “The Undomestic Goddess”, the story of a woman who finally listens to her inner calling and starts living a life she has long since been yearning for. Anyways, more of that later.

For now, this is a roller coaster you surely gotta embark upon with its colourful, joyous ride and bask in Sophie’s writing. Do let me know your favourite Sophie Kinsella Book in the comments below.

Review: Eternal Echoes by John O’ Donohue

Those who have a strong sense of love and belonging have the courage to be imperfect -Brene Brown.

Everybody surely needs to feel a sense of belonging in their course of life as it is the sole thing that helps one lead a fulfilling life and provide one with true peace and tranquillity. A sense of belonging is perhaps one of the most coveted, sought-after joys in one’s life.

I recently finished with this amazing book by John O’ Donaghue and the way it resonated with me was absolutely surreal, if truth be told. It surely is very important to be compassionate and understanding to those around you. It is equally vital that you get in tandem with what others have to say instead of being caught up in a single dimension which is your own perspective.

For me, this book was more of self-actualization of sorts read, where John with his compelling voice made me accept the importance of being human in today’s world where everything seems to be rushing at a maddeningly fast pace, thanks to the innumerable technological advancements of our era.

It is a true ensemble of the wisdom of the ages spelt out through exquisitely simple, yet captivating writing which surely is what makes it different from other titles in its genre.

It is not only essential that you look beyond your spectrum of vision but equally important that you look within deeply and muse and agree with those minute essentialities that are present and need to be considered as well. It has been nothing short of an enlightening journey reading through what has been supplied by him whilst exploring life, death, hope and all others such facets that form a crucial part of the enigma called life.

An excellent book and leaving you with a couple of lines to muse upon from it-

“I am convinced that human life is filled with many pure, happy, serene examples of insincerity, truly splendid of their kind-of-people deceiving one another without (strangely enough) any wounds being inflicted, of people who seem unaware even that they are deceiving one another.”

“He changed my face, not my heart. He threw acid

“He changed my face, not my heart.
He threw acid on my face, not my dreams.”

These lines surely will shatter your heart, questioning the realms of the sanctity of one’s humane behaviour. I mean burning someone throwing acid and deforming their face just for a grudge? To settle some so-called scores? To settle personal vendettas? A failed love? Utterly, grossly atrocious, demonic !!

My latest read “The Veil” by Chandni Goswami was such a story. Vidya Sharma aka Vidu who is the only child of her parents and her childhood friend Aadesh share a special bond that is much more than just friendship. Things get complicated when Vidu’s parents strike an alliance for her and she does not want to get betrothed to anybody except Aadesh. Aadesh’s side of the story here Is completely different. He loves her but owing to the vast differences in their familial and monetary backgrounds does not have the guts to either acknowledge or proceed with his true feelings for her.

Shall not Spoil it further but what transpires next is as unexpected as it gets. How Vidu fights to get back to life, suffering a pitfall is what forms the rest of the story.

I especially resonated with the character of her Dadimaa who was a constant source of support to her throughout the story. The part where Vidu struggles to recuperate after the acid attack has been portrayed very sensibly, the complete vantage being from her perspective, sensitively put across to not empathize, rather empower such survivors who see light beyond the dark tunnel they are subject to forcibly, thanks to such acts of barbarity. The manner in which the story has been carried forward, especially after Vidu’s attack is praiseworthy. Rather than giving the same cliched’ sympathy, Chandni has chosen to show the positives amidst the plight of Vidu, the emotional upheaval as well as the manner in which she rises above her situation like a phoenix from the ashes. Not only do we get to see the different colours of her personality, but it is certainly like experiencing them in the first person emotionally, seeing her grow through her pain and convert it to power.

“Poetry is an orphan of silence. The words never quite equal the experience behind them.”-Charles Simie.

Indeed, poetry is such a play of words that sometimes even the most straightforward and crisply written short verses might hold an uncanny power, leashing it upon us like an invisible sword, threatening to envelop us in their essence and shattering our realms of the orthodox, old-world thought process.

I happened to read such a beautiful collection of poems recently, written by Naina Pachnanda.

Naina’s poems here are like a breath of cool fresh air on a warm summer’s day, a splash of colours making the canvas come alive. These pieces claim to be have been written during one of the trickiest times known to mankind, namely the Covid 19 pandemic. What is fascinating is that they have been conceptualized in a manner that is not too complex yet each piece seems to be having beauty and relativity of its own. Based on life, love, loss, rejection, failure, hope and all other life elements that form an indispensable part of our lives, these tiny nuggets aka short bursts of relevance and wisdom are sure to make one’s day and also give them true slices of life to muse upon and adhere to. Compendious and laconic, these tiny little beacons manifest the radiance to not only transform one’s life but do so in a life-altering manner.
The cover is absolutely stunning. With soothing hues and colours, it is one of the prettiest I have seen in a while. The book has around 200 poems, each nestled in a bundle of sorts with little imagery attached.

Whilst poems like The Coronavirus, The New Normal give us a foray into hope in these troubled times pieces like suicide is never an option, Depression is real and Courage shows the huge spectrum of emotions she manages to address and cover. Pieces like “What doesn’t kill you, makes you stronger”, More Gratitude, Compassion and Liberate yourself, speak of wisdom beyond years as they show the plethora of gratefulness the poet holds and urges us to inculcate in our personas.

Feel like Attended an event after like 100yrs!!!

So I had gone to the book launch of this wonderful title called Ubuntu-I am Because we are, by Dr Shilpa Aroskar at title waves some days ago.

To tell you the truth guys, firstly it was amazibg, getting back to the physical functions after a hiatus of almost 2 years. I mean the smell of new hard covers and paperbacks, the feel of those stellar solid titles, the unspoken words the books were throwing at me tantalizingly were an absolutely delightful story.

Speaking of the chief guest, @balanvidya , well I always feel she is this chalta phirta powerhouse, emulating positivity, charming everyone around with her wit, her flamboyance spealing waves and her eloquence, well an enigma for the unversed. Her tete a tete with Dr Shilpa, the camaraderie they shared, the superb rendezvous...

Can't think which one to pick as the highlight of that magical afternoon.
Not to mention the splendid title itself, which Dr Shilpa has written with a wit, with an intention to address those troubled times of the pandemic which surely shall cast a significant impression upon our minds for long.

A mystical evening with even more magical people...

#Review : Actually… I Met Them by Gulzar

“Ek Samandar hai jo mere Kaabu mein hai,

Aur ek lamha hai, jo mujhse guzaara nahin jaata…”

These are just not words, they are the magic I turn to, revel in, especially in turbulent times when all seems awry, lost and out of control. Mystical, magical, enigmatic poetry by none other than the Great Emperor of Poetry himself of our times, Gulzar.

I, since childhood, have always been mesmerized by his poetry, by the exuberance of his words, the charismatic effect they hold upon the reader and be in awe of how he manages to surprise us every time with a new jewel, a new pearl. I mean there is surely someday or some instance a person shall be less creative or should I say less powerful. Well, not the case with this powerhouse who does not write but carves feelings, emotions on paper, raw enough to be tasted on the walls of your soul, flamboyant enough to be discerned and perused multiple times. The beauty of his writing can never be justified enough, I feel.

Just finished reading his memoir “Actually… I Met Them”. Boy oh boy!! Was I smitten? No, more than that. I was enthralled, captured in the spell of the simplicity of his writing, the revelation of his persona, his childhood acquaintances, his relationship with all those personalities of Indian Cinema like Bimal Roy, Satyajit Ray, Kishore Kumar, R D Burman, Hrishikesh Mukherjee to Mahashweta Devi and several others who have pioneered our silver screens for ages and who have been the foundation of what forms the face of Indian Cinema. His life journey, how in spite of being from a true Blue Punjabi family he came to write in Urdu, his escapades with the Bengali language, his experiences along the way whilst learning, excelling and reproducing various aesthetics along the cinematic journey he undertook with his peers is what constitutes the main body of this narrative. An indulgent, wholesome narrative is full of interesting snippets, facts and little nuggets that you shall love reading and diving into.

Come, bask in the simplicity of his mesmerizing true self…

Review: Years Spent by Lalit Kumar

Indeed, it is rightly said that poetry is not a profession rather a condition. True, it is a depiction of the poet’s depiction of his/her true feelings that they decide to put on paper in the same manner as does a painter, splaying different colours of life on a canvas.

Poetry, for me, is always a genre that I get back to, especially in times of distress. It is one of those places which give one maximum solace, I feel. The lyrical play of words, the contours created via a colourful chain of events and depictions created, the warm rush of fuzzy emotions, the stark portrayals of life and its different facets – be it love, loss, hope, heartbreak, despair or all other such elements, this is one such modicum which never fails to wonder or amaze its readers.

“Years spent” by Lalit Kumar is an anthology of one such amalgamation of true wonders. Poems in this one are divided into five subsections, each one portraying a different aspect of human emotions, splashing a different shade of life on paper. Each and every poem written by Lalit is poignant and reflects upon life in a manner that is a unique musing by itself. He explores radically paradoxical terminologies at a single point in time through his works. For instance, whilst he responds to the Higher voice call in the piece ‘If there is one true calling’ he simultaneously shows a hardcore, humbled acceptance of the insignificance of his existence via ‘You matter. A single book spanning numerous topics, Lalit manages to capture the attention of his readers and keep it hooked right until the last piece. His writing comes across as being honed over a period of time, possibly due to the enormous amount of experience he has presumably garnered over the period of his life to date.

Quite a few of the pieces are my favourites including ‘At the crossroads’, ‘The Second Mountain’, ‘Obsessed’ and quite a few others.

A superb anthology of poems, touching upon numerous facets of life and its emotions, in an immensely creative, aesthetic pursuit by a gifted poet.

Review: Framandi Alliance by Rashid Ahmed

“Fantasy is the impossible made probable. Science fiction is the improbable made possible.”

Indeed, a communion of these two genres always creates a rigmarole that is absolutely thrilling to embark upon. Science fiction by itself always explores the realms of the impossible whilst fantasy is one such genre that explores the fantastically impossible.

My recent read, “Framandi Alliance” by Rashid Ahmed is one such book that has fused these as well as many other elements which make up for an interesting, indulging read. The story revolves around two transhuman twins Jon and Asta and colonization possibilities in different galaxies.

A hard-boiled, sci-fi read, this one not only incorporates science concepts such as interstellar travel, Transhuman, contact with aliens, AI at different technological levels and all those core scientific concepts that shall make up for an entertaining, informative as well as indulgent read.

I am generally not a big sci-fi fan, to be honest as I find it tricky to remain on track owing to their complicated and racy plots and characterizations. However, this time I was in for a pleasant surprise as I realized that although Rashid has put in a substantial amount of intrinsic detailing as well as exhaustive description, he has built the premise, the plot, the characters in such a superb synergy that you cannot help being carried away into the larger repercussions the plot takes you to. He has put in a considerable amount of planning, a meticulous amount of research to bring about a multi-dimensional depiction of a larger than life story which is way ahead of its time.

Some people may find it a little tricky to keep in tandem with the enormous world built along with the extensive character line created. But having said that, the story keeps you hooked till the end. Anyways, some stories have a bigger canvas I feel, they are more exhaustively portrayed than others and that is perhaps their individual requirement I guess.

A good science fiction read I read in a while.

More than street shopping what attracts me more ar

More than street shopping what attracts me more are roadside book stalls, full of random yet fabulous, amazing collection of books, some new, some pre loved which have a story of their own to tell.
They garner my interest as I get intrigued as to why and what compelled the previous owner to read and also to later on part with it.

Once, when I was perusing such a pre loved book, a title of Jeffrey Archer(can't remember the name), I realised the previous owner had written her break up letter on the first page.

She had broken up with her boyfriend and chose the first page of this book to declare the end of her relationship with her boy friend. Sad life huh!

Holding this one, I kept wondering how the guy was feeling and going through, whether he was turning pages to find words of consolation, or was he trying to search for other words , presumably of solace between these lines......

Thats the beauty of books, be it even from a road side stall. They literally hold a tiny world between their pages. And as Viriginia Woolf said “Books are everywhere; and always the same sense of adventure fills us. Second-hand books are wild books, homeless books; they have come together in vast flocks of variegated feather, and have a charm which the domesticated volumes of the library lack. Besides, in this random miscellaneous company we may rub against some complete stranger who will, with luck, turn into the best friend we have in the world.”

Review: Worbaeth Inparadino by Yash Mundhava

“Imagination is more important than knowledge. For knowledge is limited to all we know and understand, while imagination embraces the entire world and all there ever will be to know and understand”

Indeed, this quote by Michael Scott does immense justice to our title in review today, Worbaeth Inparadino by Yash Mundhava. As intriguing as the name, the premise of the book is equally novel and unique. Mundhava, through his writing, has attempted to take us through his fantastically created concept of Worbaeth which is a blend of fantasy, philosophy as well as humour, sci-fi, as well as mystery. Attempting to establish a connection between the spiritual and the cosmic world, he has managed to create a huge universe that not only succeeds in entertaining the audiences but keeping them awestruck, thanks to the larger than life characters, the well-detailed plot, the intricate detailing created as well as the meticulous character as well as situational creatives Mundhava inputs in this piece of fantasy.

The Creator, who is also the caretaker of Kloptin Brothers, whose family grave he had dug, divulges them the knowledge of Worbaeth whilst they sleep and bids them a stone to put in the heart of the Temple he is ruling. Then proceeds the plot with an intense, mysterious yet breakneck speed following their pursuit as they set about to uncover the truth behind the mother Irona’s suicide, who had incidentally left a strange suicide letter behind to be deciphered.

Not only is the plot and premise richly detailed but Mundhava manages to keep the readers hooked on with his vivid imagination and riveting plot twists. The gait of the book is good and so is the balance between maintaining the right equilibrium between elements of fantasy, mystery as well as fiction.

Although claiming that his work is based on his subconscious sense, Mundhava’s writing surely comes across as not a haphazard jot down, rather as a meticulously created vision which he has penned with intense skill and craftsmanship giving reasonable justice to this debut piece of writing endeavour by him.

“All I ever want is to be happy with the love of my life, settled with my offspring and content as far as my family goes.”

Well, which married person doesn’t desire this? Unfortunately, marriage being the Pandora’s box it rightly portrays itself as, is a synergy, a synchronization which I feel takes skilled efforts from both the sides equally.

My title in review today, Climbing the Walls by Sacha T Y Fortune is the first in the Hart and Cole series. It is always indulging to read and pore over life experiences, especially as they make you feel a part of others’ world. Fortunately, for me this break through read came via this particular book, thanks to the Saga Fiction App, a place where you get e books in a serial, episodic form, making up for an interesting reading experience. The best part of the story is that it has been told from both the perspectives, which I strongly feel is a first as generally in books exploring dynamics of interpersonal relationships, generally both the sides of the story are not balanced and put forward. There tends to be quite a bit of prejudice.

A heart wrenching, raw, real side of life has been depicted in this one. Nicole, who is a workaholic has chosen her work and a successful career over reliving the day to day treasures of family life whilst Kris, more plays the role of the balancing family man, the doting father and husband. Plus the fact that Nicole’s boss at work too seems to be having a troubled marriage doesn’t help things either. Will she be able to balance her work and married life or will her relationship vitalities crumble under the social demeanor of her so called social, power woman status?
A roller coaster read, a superb attempt to incorporate love, passion, heart ache, family bonding, loss, rage as well as valuable lessons all in one.(not to mention sex too!) I have always resonated with and come to read between the lines as far as Dumbledore's words are concerned.
This particular quote by him which he uses in reference to Harry's innermost nature has been of a very mystical nature to me. True, each and every character compares him with both his parents, more so with his father James yet I always feel Dumbledore refrains from doing so much . The one instance he compares him in Prisoner of Azkaban is when he refers to Harry's eyes being like Lily's, I felt he surreptitiously avoided James's reference ( perhaps as an empathy to Snape).

I feel the ultimate reality being that although his bravery, daring, chivalry, recklessness and disregard for School rules (not to mention his superb Seeker skills) are inherited from James, yet the fact that he has benevolence and perhaps even a note of pity for Voldemort, his arch nemesis, makes him compassionate and forgiving like Lily deep down.

Couldn't help but marvel today at the shades Rowling has given to Harry's character.

“My business is to enjoy and have fun. And why not, if in the end, everything will end right?”

Indeed, we have gotta live life for the moment because everything else is uncertain. For me, such a free spirit, such a Bohemian kind of vibe synchronizes with one of the true Greek Gods of the Cinematic World, the man I grew up being smitten by-Kabir Bedi. He for me has been that one person who is free-spirited, having least regard for the conventional rules and practices that threaten to challenge the core of our rational chain of thoughts. Indeed, Kabir’s life has been much sought after, spoken about and always been a point of interest, especially with the paparazzi.

Growing up, I was always a true blue movie buff, laying my hands on possible magazines as reading and exploring the lifestyles of these larger than life stars was a passion. Kabir Bedi being one of my personal favourites, I always admired the way he carries himself but was also wistful of the piles of info related to his life especially personal which keep doing rounds on media at that time.

Fortunately, with this Memoir coming to my rescue, I can now say that all those murky bits of gossip have been put to rest as we have the true side of the story as far as this enigmatic personality is concerned. Not only is the writing candid and straight from the heart, but I also have come to admire the fearless frank and open manner in which Kabir has laid bare the true facts related to his life for all to not only read but muse upon and take a leaf outta his experiences with life and its trysts.

I also am in awe of the fact that his writing is simply not a piece of an escapade written to put forward his side of the story, but rather a seamlessly constructed flowing piece of aesthetic, ephemeral art, ephemeral art, full of the colours of life, depicting the joy of living.

My Greek god documented his life’s memoir in such an abstractly beautiful manner. Bravo!!

Indeed, we all are made up of imperfections. The important thing to note in life is that in spite of those it is essential that we appreciate and look up to them and celebrate and live life to the fullest alongside those imperfections.

A book I happened to read recently reinforced this belief of mine and gave it a truckload of fuel, thanks to its effective message dispersion-We all are beautiful in our own unique ways. It is upon us to find beauty even in the flaws and continue to move on.

The plot revolves around Prakash and Chandrika, their unusual love story, their ‘different from the ordinary’ kind of personalities, as labelled by the society and the importance of support and resilience in one’s life.

Chandrika, who is struggling with societally labelled 'flaws' and Prakash who comes from a debilitated familial background happen to meet and fall in love. What follows is a fabulous journey highlighting not only the highs and lows of their love story but tracing their entire journey.
Chandrika, who is initially reluctant, yet a confident person, resonated with me the most. The way she accepts her bottlenecks of life and yet embraces life as beautifully is what touched me deeply.

I also especially loved the fact that Chandrika’s family was in support of her regardless, relentlessly throughout.
With a headstrong core idea, superbly built characters, excellent depictions, The Different Bride, though coming across as a simple romantic read, is surely much beyond a regular romantic.

“The devadasis have a multi-layered story, a story in which poverty, deprivation and injustice against women is central- but what has happened to them is absolutely an outcome of imperialism and the impact of British rule in India.”

Indeed, the plight of devadasis is one topic I personally feel is one that has not been approached with the right kind of sensitivity. Misplaced Heads by Jayanthi Sankar provides the readers with a glimpse of those whose footprints are hard to locate. It encases a journey over hundreds of years not only showcasing their devotion to the different celebrated art forms but also bringing light upon their plight.

The plot revolves around Poorna and Raghu and the changing colours of their relationship. How their relationship evolves over time and how chaos takes over, forms the basis of the plot along with the extensive amount of research the author has decided to portray detailing facts related to Ancient as well as Medieval History is commendable. The complete manner in which she has managed to depict the elegance and the intrinsic lifestyle factors of the devadasis and their lifestyle is praiseworthy. It surely makes up for an interesting read, what with the detail-rich narration and the colours portrayed through the narrative.

What also caught my attention was the beautiful manner in which Jayanthi has given us the detailed knowledge of Bharat Natyam, the mudras and the entire aesthetic art. Surely, an immense amount of rich, detailed research must have been done by her to grasp this multitude of information.

I have personally always felt that women, who have for aeons of time now, been considered as second citizens by all strata of the society, continue to fight even for their basic existence, till today, even after the onset of the so-called ultra-modern era. In this scenario, books like this surely act as a whistleblower, a reminder to us, depicting the sad state of affairs as far as their stance in society is concerned.

Review: Inner Trek: A Reluctant Pilgrim’s Journey Through the Himalayas by Mohan Ranga Rao

Sometimes you come across a book that completely changes your entire aura, your spiritual path. That’s when you realize the repercussions of a good book, a joyous read, a wholesome slice of life that particular piece of writing imparts through itself, slowly, gradually with the turn of every single page.

For me, such a book happened to be Inner Trek: A Reluctant Pilgrim’s Journey through the Himalayas.

When I started reading this book, I had an inclination that this was a story related to a trip to Kailash Mansarovar. As I proceeded, the complete land mafia angle came into vogue. I nevertheless delved further, waiting to see where the story led me on to. That’s when I got amazed by the kind of writing that Mohan Ranga Rao has managed to execute. It is simply not a story of his journey to this destination, but also a journey encapsulating his entire experience. The twist of fate depicted through the way in which the story changes vantage from the land mafia angle to Kailash Mansarovar was an absolute gobsmack!!

His tete a tete with his wife, the witty conversations between both, have been an amazing read for me throughout. Mohan's wry humour kept me entertained as well as amused. What was also attention-grabbing was the manner in which he dished out such life-altering details and facts related to the yatra and the trek in a simple yet non-overwhelming way. I could completely relate to the aura shift once Mohan and the group travellers embarked upon this holistic yet rational experience. The reason as to why they undertook this trip had me intrigued throughout, the realization of which was the absolute high point for me.

I generally don’t get emotional very easily. However, thanks to this book, I have experienced the avalanche of happiness of having travelled to Mansarovar, which I know is physically impossible for me.

For me, reading and the complete experience called "inner Trek" have been absolutely spellbinding, enlightening, engulfing, and much more.
